Five of the justices were vetted by the Federalist Society. This change from the traditional ABA vetting was to avoid getting a Souter or Stevens or Kennedy who looked at issues based on precedent and the Constitution. The GOP has been pushing for some form of autocracy since the Reagan years (trickle down economics, moral majority). McConnell was very outspoken that the best way to assure it happens is to have our people on the courts because they will assure our policies stand, and by thwarting the Democrats when they have congress and presidency. I imagine that the turtle is gloating in his office every time SCOTUS makes a ruling that makes no sense but makes another cut to our freedoms.

Our democracy and constitutional ideals have been destroyed by the power of money, the oligarchy, and like power that corrupts they have been corrupted to think they are what is best, and they are not. In the 1880s we had a similar laize faire and that oligarchy failed once the unions gained power in the 1920s. That is when we started to build a middle class that lasted 60 years until the break up of the unions by Reagan. So it’s time to rebuild our unions and middle class.
